Mission Statement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Math and Science Upward Bound\u2019s mission is to assist participants in acquiring the academic tools, financial resources, and self-confidence to achieve a four-year degree at the college of their choice and ultimately a career in a STEM profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our vision at MSUB is to be a catalyst in nurturing innovative thinkers to become leaders in STEM Fields with the intention of creating a network for support, growth, and outreach to local and global communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program History, Background, and Evolution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To help address the disparities of the underrepresentation of disadvantaged college students in math and science majors and STEM Careers, the U.S. Department of Education established a math and science initiative in 1990 within Upward Bound. The initiative, Upward Bound Math-Science, was designed to differ from \u201cregular\u201d Upward Bound projects by including hands-on mentoring and research experience in laboratories, computer facilities, and at field sites provided by STEM Professors at the host institution or professionals within the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upward Bound Math and Science was awarded to The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1991 and served as a regional program with an outreach to eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. In 2007 the program was re-designed from an eight-state regional grant to one serving East Tennessee rural counties closer to UT Knoxville. UBMS serves 71 students a year from six target schools: Campbell County High School, Grainger High School, Jefferson County High School, Loudon High School, Pigeon Forge High School, Union County High School. UBMS has been established at The University of Tennessee for over 30 years, assisting over 2,000 students pursue their dreams of becoming a first-generation college graduate and STEM professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

STUDENTS WE SERVE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

TN is behind the nation in test scores, which means that the counties and schools that fall behind state scores are in a desperate situation. Our target school students face high levels of poverty, and schools in this area lack the financial resources to prepare students for the challenging math and science fields. To combat the high poverty levels and break the cycle of low college enrollment in the target area, students must realize the benefits of a college education. However, with the large number of minimally educated adults and the low number of counselors in the schools, many students never receive the necessary information to apply for and succeed in post-secondary education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the obstacles, many target school students have the interest and capacity to succeed in math and science postsecondary programs. To succeed, they must receive additional guidance, support, and services. Without proper resources or motivation, the students may never reach their full potential. The fields of math and science are challenging, but students can accomplish their goals with appropriate assistance from UBMS which is well-equipped to provide the motivation, skills, and resources necessary to propel students from East Tennessee into the world of math and science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
